Our Outstanding Youth
Rebecca Ramey is an outstanding athlete in a variety of sports. Rebecca is a member of the Labrador Midget Female hockey team and in 2008, was selected to attend the program of Excellence Camp in Gander. She was a member of the provincial female soccer team competing in the Atlantic championship in PEI and National competition in Edmonton. She was also on the high school soccer team and coached and refereed for the minor soccer association. She was part of both the silver medal team at the provincial broomball play downs and Summer Games ball hockey team. She placed 2nd at the regional cross country running meet and completed her Bronze medallion swimming course.
 
Clint Gear is involved in both school and community sports. He played on the Junior Provincial Broomball team, and in the midget provincial hockey tournament. He also represented our province at the National Aboriginal Hockey tournament. His hockey coaches say that Clint exhibits fine sportsmanship and leaderships skills, that he is a cooperative and hard working player and an asset to the hockey association and our community. He was a contender as rookie of the year in Men's Senior Soft ball League. At age 16, Clint was the youngest participant in the 2008 Junior Strong Man Competition and he won this division against 19 and 20 year olds. The organizers of the Strong Man competition look forward to his continued participation.
 
Gladdale Matthews is a level 3 student at Mealy Mountain Collegiate, who is a product of the Labrador Creative Arts Festival. Her interest in the arts includes drama, writing, reading and music. During the regional high school Drama Festival in Labrador City, she was not only the director of the play, but also an actress and she also wrote the play that won first place. She plays piano and is in the Vocal Ensemble at school and participated in Festival 500. She has recently entered her writings in the provincial Arts and Letters Competition.
 
Laura Battcock is an honours student in level 3 at Mealy Mountain Collegiate. She is involved in many facets of our community and is a participant in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards program. At school she is a member of the vocal ensemble, school choir, the Math League, the soccer team, cross country running team and the phys ed committee. She teaches ballet and tap dance to children 4-10 years old. She is an active volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life, the Teddy Bear Picnic, and Big Land Fair. Laura is keenly involved in environmental issues and you may have read her recent article about Earth Hour, in the Labradorian newspaper. Laura has just been offered an entrance scholarship to Mount Saint Vincent University where she plans to major in Women's Studies with a minor in environmental or international studies. She feels strongly that the key to solving many of the problems in the world exists in the education of women in third world countries.
 
Sarah Connell is a blossoming young woman who has overcome many medical and developmental challenges throughout her life. Sarah is an inspiration to this community, with her involvement and participation in a wide range of activities. She attends ballet, tap and modern dance classes, swims and participates in Minor Soccer. She is involved in school activities including drama and was a "munchkin" in the production of Wizard of Oz. Sarah's passion is skating and she is good at it. She participated in the Regional and Provincial Skating events as the only Special Olympics skater from Labrador. Sarah supports the Janeway and last year she fundraised $550 for the telethon. She is helping to change the way we view disabled individuals in our community. Sarah Connell enriches the lives of others and is truly an ambassador for disabled people.

Kaitlyn Abbass is a true athlete in every sense of the word. At Mealy Mountain Collegiate she is the leading scorer in basketball, plays badminton, volleyball, and cross country running. She was the co-captain of the High School soccer team which won gold at the provincial championships. She was the assistant captain on the Lake Melville Female All-Star Hockey Team, and led her team in scoring. She won a gold medal at the 2007 Mega Tournament. She played soccer in the 2007 Lab Cup and was awarded Most Valuable Player of her team, Most Valuable Player of the Tournament, and the Most Outstanding Youth of the Tournament. She was a member of the Provincial Female Hockey Team which won a silver medal at the Atlantic Challenge Cup and placed fifth at the Canada Games in Whitehorse. She is committed to her sport and displays a high work ethic, drive and determination at games and practices alike. Kaitlyn is presently being recruited to play hockey and soccer for Universities in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

Alex White excels in many sports including figure skating, soccer and hockey. In 2007, Alex was honoured with a Provincial Award for Competitive Skater of the Year, and with a 4th place finish at the Junior Canadian Figure Skating Nationals held in Toronto. He was awarded Player of the Game in one game at the Atlantic Championship Under 13 Boys Soccer Tournament. His coaches say that Alex gives 150% at every game and that he is a team player. He has the ability to make the other players on his team better because he is an unselfish player. The accomplishments and accolades that he has garnered in his short sports career are directly related to his work ethic and perseverance.

Emily Best is a dedicated volunteer, serious about school and a young entrepreneur. She is treasurer of the Dream Catchers Youth Council, and a member of Futures in Newfoundland and Labrador Youth. She has volunteered with the Big Land Fair, Winterlights, for the Community Youth Network at Goose Stock and the Teddy Bear Picnic. She is an honours student at Mealy Mountain Collegiate and received the award for "Best Overall Student" in 2007. She was also chosen by the Fry Family Foundation for the Horizon's Award from Memorial University. She is a member of the Anti-Bullying Committee and volunteers in the canteen at lunch hours. Emily operates a small craft business called Em's Gems producing and wholesaling her products to stores in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, North West River, Forteau, Stephenville, and St. John's. She believes that every person can make a difference if they try.

Chad Johnson is a Level 3 student at Mealy Mountain Collegiate who was selected by the Department of Education to participate in a 6 month French Exchange program in 2007 in Marieville Quebec. He is a member of the school Jazz Band and participated in the 2007 "Back to the 80's" musical. He is the Squadron Commander and Drill Team Commander of the 764 Air Cadet Squadron. In 2007, he was promoted to Warrant Officer First Class, which is the highest rank attainable by a cadet. He is working on the Bronze Level of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, is the Co-Captain of the Melville Mantas Swim team, and is a Red Cross instructor for swim lessons. He volunteers with the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Drive, Cadets Caring for Canada, and the Penny Drive for the Janeway Telethon. With his incredible leadership abilities, Chad is able to encourage people to work harder and strive for their best, while still earning their respect and remaining their friend.

Jennifer Hinks, who has dedicated much of her youth to community and school athletic programs. She has represented Mealy Mountain Collegiate in soccer, volleyball, basketball and table tennis, as well as being an active member of the Phys Ed Committee. As a member of Snowflake Figure Skating club since she was 3 years old, she has achieved several Gold medals at Regional Figure Skating Competitions. Jennifer strives to be a role model for young aspiring athletes by coaching and mentoring in the Canskate Program. She has been involved in Minor Soccer as a competitor, coach, volunteer and referee. In 2007 she was part of the AAA High School Provincial Soccer Championships. Win or lose, her focus has always been to prioritize team spirit and sportsmanship while representing her community.

Andrew Batstone is involved in hockey, volleyball and golf and has been recipient of most sportsmanlike player on several occasions. In 2007 he was a member of the Championship team at the Provincial All Stars Tournament held in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, placed 2nd in his division with the Provincial Golf team, and played in the Triple A Provincial volleyball tournament with the Mealy Mountain Hawks. He believes that it is not in winning that an athlete proves themselves, but in how they handle adversity. He says that good sportsmanship is a quality that one can carry with them for their whole life.

Sunil Pradhan has an impressive array of athletic achievements. In 2007 he won a gold medal in cross-country skiing at the Provincials and competed at the National competition in Whistler BC. He shares his love of skiing by teaching in the Jackrabbit program at Birch Brook. He has achieved his Bronze Medallion lifesaving course in swimming. He is a member of the Mealy Mountain Collegiate cross country running team, the school soccer team and the all star soccer team. He is dedicated to training and the constant quest to improve his technique.

Victor Ryan graduated as an honours student from Mealy Mountain Collegiate, where he was involved in Student Council as treasurer, the Ike Riche Players drama program, the Yearbook Committee, the Anti-Smoking Initiative, and the math league. He is a dedicated volunteer, giving freely of his time to community events such as the Teddy Bear Picnic, Santa Claus Parade, Aboriginal Family Day and Peacock Elementary Sports Day. He is a young ambassador for our country, representing Canada at the People to People International Diplomacy program in New York City and Washington DC. In that capacity he participated in political and diplomatic endeavors including a mock United Nations conference, and a formal dinner at the Saudi Arabian Embassy. He says that even a little effort from each of us can go a long way to help solve the problems of our world.

Tom Niles is a French Immersion student at Mealy Mountain Collegiate, active in Student Council and the arts. He held a supporting role in the musical 'Disco Inferno' and is so dedicated to the arts that he performed with a broken leg and on crutches. He has participated in the Lake Melville Music Festival for the past 8 years and is involved in the school choir. He is a junior member of the Goose Bay Curling Club and reads scripture at the United Church. Tom believes in the power of volunteering, giving his time to the SPCA where he cleans the pens, feeds and walks the dogs, and helps with fundraising. He exhibits a genuine affection and concern for humanity and the humane treatment of animals. The SPCA recognizes that Tom has a promising future of civic service and is truly an inspiration to other young people.

Christin Chiasson is a passionate and extremely creative student who is involved with school both academically and socially, as well as a strong supporter of the community. Chrissy displays great leadership and interpersonal skills while often motivating her fellow students. She is the Secretary on the Student Council at Mealy Mountain Collegiate. She is an honour roll student and always has a smile on her face. Chrissy has participated in Ike Riche Players, the vocal ensemble and jazz bands, grad committee, phys ed committee and Tutoring for Tuition. She is dedicated volunteer with the SPCA for over 8 years, cleaning kennels, bathing and walking the dogs, and showing children the importance of handling and caring for pets. She compiled a cookbook that the SPCA used as a fundraiser. Chrissy is always willing to help out in any capacity to ensure that things get done.
Robert Tracey graduated from Mealy Mountain Collegiate in June of 2007 where he had been long time member of the Ike Riche Players. He provided entertainment at the community awards banquet for the past 3 years. Over the years, he has volunteered to set up and manage the sound systems at many community events such as Goose Stock, Relay for Life, the Community Awards and the Labrador Winter Games. In 2007, he was selected to attend the International Theatre School in Scotland, starred in a lead role, and received critical acclaim for his work. He received an entrance scholarship for Drama and Film to Bishop's University in Quebec. In April 2008, he received an award from his University as 'Best New Male Actor'.
