Success Stories
Birch Brook Nordic Ski Club
Birch Brook Nordic Ski Club opened their new ski chalet in November 2009. This 3000 sq ft modern log structure, complete with classroom, meeting room, kitchen, rental shop, washrooms/change rooms and sauna is a vast improvement from the 30 year old wooden structure the club used (without electricity or running water). At a cost of well over ½ Million dollars to build, the club worked for several years raising corporate donations and government funding. They are most grateful for contributions from Service Canada, INTRD, ACOA and donations from Vale Inco.
The facility is used by club members, but is also available for rental by businesses and social groups. Birch Brook offers ski rental for its world class trail system including 30 km of wilderness trails and 2 remote cabins. In the summer and fall, the club also offers botanical interpretation tours along the trails. The new chalet will be well utilized during the Cross Country Skiing competition in the March 2010 Labrador Winter Games.
The Central Labrador Economic Development Board (CLEDB) supported Birch Brook with their lobby effort and in the development of a Sustainability and Business Plan for future maintenance and operational costs. This plan included raising membership fees, and developing rental schemes for the conference facilities and other services now available in the new building. Within the first few months of opening, the club has accumulated enough earnings to cover 4 months of operations.
Congratulations to the volunteers of Birch Brook Nordic Ski Club.
